There is large family of corona virus causes illness like common cold and fever in human and animals. In humans, several coronaviruses are known to cause respiratory infections ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The most recently discovered coronavirus called as 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) causes coronavirus disease COVID-19.

The CDC recommends a priority system for who should get tested for the coronavirus. At the top of the list are people who have COVID-19 symptoms and who meet at least one of these criteria:

  • Are admitted to the hospital
  • Work in a health care facility
  • Are first responders
  • Work or live in places where many people live, such as long-term care facilities or prisons


What are the document needed for Covid-19 test

  • Mandatory documents defined by Govt. of India without which testing of COVID 19 is not allowed:
    1) Patient Information Form (Patient Proforma, to be provided by SRL Lab personnel and filled by the patient)
    2) Referring doctor’s prescription (requirement may vary depending upon mandate by the respective state government guidelines) and
    3) Govt. photo-id ( Aadhaar card/ Voter Id / Passport) to support the current address and contact number of the suspect patient to be provided at the time of sample collection.
  • How to get tested for Coronavirus?

    In case you feel your symptoms are specific to the coronavirus, your healthcare provider can get in touch with CDC or the local healthcare departments for testing instructions. There are specific labs set up for conducting coronavirus tests, so you may be directed to one of these labs. 

    There are different types of coronavirus tests that can be done: 

    • Swab Test – In this case, a special swab is used to take a sample from your nose or throat
    • Nasal aspirate – In this case, a saline solution will be injected into your nose and, then a sample is taken with a light suction
    • Tracheal aspirate – In this case, a thin tube with a torch, also known as a bronchoscope, is put into your mouth to reach your lungs from where a sample is collected. 
    • Sputum Test – Sputum is thick mucus that gets accumulated in the lungs and comes out with a cough. During this test, you’re required to cough up sputum in a special cup or a swab is used to take a sample from your nose. 
    • Blood test – In this case, a blood sample is taken from a vein in the arm.
